The India-US Dialogues
The India-US Dialogues hosted by the Observer Research Foundation and Network 18 began on January 24th with panels ranging from security and international relations to business and economics, encapsulating the range of issues on everyone’s minds as Prime Minister Modi and President Obama met for Republic Day. One major introductory question was whether India and the US could turn their acknowledged similarities and emotional connection, as epitomized by their current leaders, into a transition from estrangement to partnership. Some argued that this Republic Day meeting could see potentially big resolutions to the nuclear dispute, defence challenges, and climate change; others viewed managing official and public expectations as more important. Considering the positive impetus to the India-US relationship, including $10 billion in defence cooperation and a mutual view of themselves as ‘natural allies’ since the Vajpayee administration, this summit might be viewed more as a continuation of existing trends rather than a crowning achievement. Yet now that international business strategy requires taking India into account, and India’s economic and electrification needs require US investment and a nuclear liability resolution, there is the potential for movement on both sides.
