Talk on ‘National Security Implications of the Current Energy Crisis’ Since 2021, energy markets have experienced upheaval based on a variety of factors including the rapid economic rebound following the pandemic. The situation further escalated into a global energy crisis following Russia’s actions in Ukraine in February 2022. Energy prices reached record highs, contributing to high inflation and slowed economic growth, and leading some countries straight into recession. This has led governments to employ a range of measures aimed at mitigating the impact of higher costs on consumers and businesses as well as ensuring energy security. Yet, energy security not only entails securing energy supplies but also securing these at affordable prices. In this volatile global context, Prof Brenda Shaffer will address the national security implications of the current energy crisis.
