The Monograph reviews the existing food grain production pattern in India, examines the issues involved in estimating future requirements of food grains and finally gives a realistic estimate of demand for food grains in 2020. To illustrate the existing situation, quantitative data on urban/rural as well as below poverty urban/rural expenditure and consumption patterns for not just food grains but also cereals, pulses, vegetable, meat and milk products along with their calorific values is given; state wise consumption patterns are not ignored.
