The 23 September presidential polls in the Indian Ocean archipelago acquired geo-strategic dimensions for South Asia and beyond much before incumbent President Abdulla Yameen filed his nomination for a second term — and domestic, democracy concerns that it aired. Both concerns got overlapped during the campaign for the polls, which is also the first one-on-one election since the nation became a multiparty democracy in 2008. The stakes were high and the poll results are going to make waves in the neighbourhood.
