As global emissions continue to rise, energy transitions must accelerate — but not at the cost of the Global South’s development priorities. For countries like India and Brazil, where fossil fuels remain central to economic growth and social welfare, the shift to clean energy must be just, inclusive, and context-specific. A one-size-fits-all model will not work. Nationally determined pathways must balance affordability, access, and social stability while investing in new infrastructure, skills, and policy frameworks for a green economy.
This session will examine how global technology partnerships, green workforce development, and climate-aligned financial flows can advance equitable energy transitions in the Global South. India’s Project Surya—a collaboration between ReNew Power, UNEP, and SEWA—offers one such model, training low-income women to take on skilled roles in the solar energy sector. Brazil’s long-standing ethanol biofuel program demonstrates how community-driven innovation can create both environmental and socioeconomic value. As the world’s largest emerging economies, India and Brazil stand at the forefront of redefining what a just transition looks like—one that is rooted in local realities yet global in ambition. This session will draw lessons from these diverse pathways to identify scalable solutions and collaborative frameworks that can help bridge the gap between equity and ambition, ensuring that the clean energy future is powered by all and benefits all.
