T20 Side Event | Panel Discussion on Towards Reformed Multilateralism: Transforming Global Institutions and Frameworks

The world is facing a crisis of multilateralism today. International organisations established in the 20th century, in the post-World War II era, no longer signify contemporary power configurations. This is most evident in the UN Security Council structure, which reflects the power equilibrium of a bygone era. As a result, we have seen an overall weakening of the global governance architecture. India has advocated a reformed multilateralism so that international organisations are more accountable and more inclusive. At the top of this agenda has been expanding representation of the global south in UN-led multilateral institutions.

As the global community settles into the second decade of the 21st century, it confronts issues like climate financing, equitable trade, and healthcare which require a proactive transnational approach. These issues also matter for emerging economies and the global south. How can we reform the existing multilateral framework that best serves our purpose? What reforms can be undertaken at the WHO, WTO and ILO which will further the multilateral agenda? Do we need to create new frameworks for fostering greater digital cooperation?

ORF, in partnership with the Symbiosis School of International Studies, Pune, is organising a Think20 (T20) Side Event as part of India’s G20 Presidency titled, ‘Towards Reformed Multilateralism: Transforming Global Institutions and Frameworks.’

The event will include a panel discussion followed by student presentations and audience interaction.
