BIMSTEC Summit 2022 | Maintaining Maritime Security: India’s Multilateral Measures

This event will start at 3:00 p.m. IST. Link to the broadcast will be made available here.

The acronym of India’s vision of ‘Security and Growth for All in the Region’ ― ‘SAGAR’, translates to ‘ocean’ in Hindi. It is indicative of the emphasis India places on maritime security, as a peninsular country, and fits in perfectly with its new role as the lead country for the BIMSTEC sector of cooperation on ‘Security’. Under it, India is tasked to look after three subsectors; Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC), Disaster Management and Energy. As India considers the Bay of Bengal to be one of its primary areas of interest, this role has the potential to facilitate its foreign policy priorities. As the 5th BIMSTEC Summit draws closer to date, it is important to gain an insight into how India visualises maritime security via this organisation.
