Contemporary references to Jainism in Tamil Nadu relate to migration that took place over the last five centuries. Jainism had, however, started travelling to south India over 1,500 years and flourished under local court patronages.

Over 85,000 Jains live in Tamil Nadu. Tamil savant Thiruvalluvar and grammarian Tholkappiar, among others, were believed to be from the community.

This talk forms the fourth and last of the year's ORF Madras Day interactions.
