The electoral system in Sri Lanka has been going through shifts and changes since the country’s independence in 1948. While the ‘proportional representation’ scheme replaced the ‘first-past-the-post’ system decades ago, integral infirmities in striking an ethnic balance continue to exist. Today, the country is looking for the right mix.

This event will explore various facets of Sri Lanka’s electoral process. It will look into the challenges and opportunities of the country’s election system.

Ratnajeevan Hoole is a member of Sri Lanka's Election Commission. He is a human rights activist and has authored the book — The Broken Palmyrah.
