Port of Call? India and the Sittwe Port

India recently acquired the right to operate its second overseas port, Sittwe, in Myanmar. On 9
May 2023, the Sittwe Port was inaugurated with the arrival of the first Indian cargo ship from
Kolkata.

Could Sittwe be a game-changer for the region? Could it help to handle increased maritime traffic?
Will the conflict in Myanmar’s Rakhine State impact economic activity? And do India’s rights to the
port give it a strategic advantage over China?

Bringing together experts on India-Myanmar relations, this event will unpack the present and
future of the Sittwe Port.
