Myanmar's Proposed 2025 Elections: An Asia Centre Perspective

The Myanmar military overthrew the democratically elected government in February 2021, sparking a civil war that has resulted in thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions. In recent months, the military has been losing ground to rebel forces. Neighbouring countries have urged Myanmar’s military government to seek a resolution, prompting the government to propose elections in 2025. This session, structured as a briefing on current developments in Myanmar, will explore post-2010 electoral trends, the evolving political landscape ahead of the proposed 2025 elections and regional and international responses to the 2025 election plans.

The session will begin with an introduction to the Asia Centre, followed by a discussion addressing key questions, including:

  1. What were the key trends in Myanmar following the 2010 elections, and how have they shaped the current political landscape?
  2. What are the implications of the proposed 2025 elections for Myanmar's future governance and stability?
  3. What role has the international community and Myanmar’s neighbouring countries played in addressing the political crisis in Myanmar, and how might it influence the 2025 elections?
