World Creativity and Innovation Day (WCID) is celebrated globally on 21 April. Established by the United Nations and first observed in 2018, it has since become an occasion to raise awareness about the importance of creativity and innovation across all fields of human endeavour.
Technology is now a core enabler of creativity. It is no longer merely a tool; it is the driving force of modern ingenuity—transforming ideas, sectors, and industries, and giving rise to cutting-edge enterprises, many of which were inconceivable a decade ago. Innovation, however, should not go unchecked: sparks of creativity require shields of caution.
This series of essays, written in observance of WCID 2026, explores these themes. Beginning with pieces that examine creative industries such as advertising, fashion, and gaming, it goes on to analyse strategies for making large language models more inclusive and adapting copyright to the age of AI. The series then turns to emerging innovations in AI-driven neuroscience, fintech, cyber-resilience, and self-sufficiency in critical minerals.
