Myanmar: Can the Generals Resist Change?

Scenes of protest and crackdowns have dominated the world’s image of Myanmar. There has been a tendency to view the country exclusively from the prism of political processes, without studying its history, society, economy, culture and external interactions.

It is necessary to bridge the concerns regarding political change with the socio-economic issues, thereby formulating an understanding of the country in its totality.

Change, however, has taken place in Myanmar both in the domestic front, for better or for worst, and in the way Myanmar sees itself and the way others see it. Regional geopolitics, the rise of China, India and ASEAN member-countries, and Myanmar’s exploitation of natural resources has altered the geopolitical value of Myanmar. Any attempt to deal with the “Myanmar question” needs to take this factor into account.

As the international community focuses on bringing about political normalization, it is important to take a relative holistic view of all relevant factors. This book is an attempt to understand some of these issues in relation to Myanmar.
