Maldives: Where from here, India relations

Domestic developments over the past fortnight have added a new dimension to bilateral relations between Maldives and India. The Maldivian Supreme Court has confirmed the conviction and thirteen year prison term for former President Mohammed Nasheed in the 'Judge Abdulla abduction case'. Simmering differences between President Abdulla Yameen and his half-brother, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, have also emerged. This discussion will explore what the current developments in the Maldives mean for India — if India will continue to back the incumbent regime at the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Committee (CMAG) meeting in September — reflecting New Delhi's position on the 'democracy movement' led by Nasheed, amid the 'Gayoom revolt' on one hand, and the Yameen leadership on the other.
