The India-UK partnership, which has evolved with India’s changing role in the global development landscape, could be key for both India and the world. Last month, as part of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the UK, it was announced that the already strong India-UK research partnership will continue to grow with investments focused on issues of global importance including technology, agriculture, clean energy, global health, and the environment.

In the context of India’s thriving partnership with the African continent and the two countries’ reaffirmed commitment to responsible global leadership, particularly in vulnerable commonwealth member states, the India-UK cooperation could open up several new opportunities.

The key driving questions for this discussion:

  • Britain is already established as India’s second largest research partner, with joint investment between both countries in science and innovation having grown exponentially in the last decade. How can this unique partnership be best leveraged to tackle global challenges?
  • India and the UK have identified Africa as a main region where they want to deepen their cooperation in third countries. What are some of the opportunities and challenges for India-UK cooperation in Africa?
  • What would a successful partnership yield in five years?
