Liberal democracy in Southeast Asia has long struggled in the face of authoritarianism, monarchy, nationalism and ethnic chauvinism. Some say that Malaysia is a “surprise case” — however, the region's overall democratic health is somewhat ebbing. There are growing concerns in Thailand, Philippines, Cambodia and Myanmar.
This discussion aims to capture the dynamics and undercurrents of democratic transformations in the region — with particular focus on Malaysian elections.
