Understanding the Rightward Shift of European Politics

In 2024, Europe experienced a visible shift to the right, with both the European Union (EU) polls and national elections Portugal, France, Belgium and Austria showing a significant rightward shift. Significantly, the June 2024 European elections saw the centre-right European People's Party (EPP) making a major gain, securing 188 seats (out of 720 seats) in the European Parliament. They were followed by the Social Democrats (S&D) with 136 seats and the Patriots for Europe group, which won 84 seats. This is not a short-term trend but rather a political movement that has been in making for nearly two decades. Notably, this shift is part of a broader trend, though shaped by different factors on either side of the Atlantic. Why are these parties (earlier called as fringe groups) gaining popularity across the continent? What are the implications of rightward shift both for Europe (including European Union) and beyond?
