Towards ‘Controlled’ Growth of the Indian Space Economy

This edition of the ORF Fellows Seminar Series will discuss Chaitanya Giri’s paper, ‘Charting a Path to Controlled Growth for India’s ‘Sunrise’ Space Economy.’ India aims to increase its share in the global space economy eightfold by 2047. However, this growth is expected to occur during a time of immense geopolitical turbulence and increasing multipolarity. Achieving this growth will require India to trade in space innovation, including exports to strategically identified destinations. Such exports necessitate three major corrections. First, strengthening the current space-deficient SCOMET export controls in India. Second, streamlining the domestic trade classification system to ensure seamless econometrics of diverse space technologies, components, sub-components, systems, and subsystems; and third, to secure India’s exports and monitor them, India must work on space-items amendments during the World Customs Organisation’s HS Nomenclature Amendments scheduled for 2034.
