Diverse Narratives and Shared Beliefs explore the complex landscape of Deoband Islam across India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Moving beyond simplified portrayals, it reveals the internal diversity of the movement, tracing its historical evolution, theological foundations, and social impact. The book situates Deoband Islam within South Asia’s broader processes of modernity, identity, and change, offering new insights into how faith traditions interact with shifting political and cultural contexts.
By categorising Deoband Islam into three regional variants, the work highlights how each reflects its unique socio-political environment. It also amplifies the voices of Deobandi scholars and organisations who reject extremism and promote peace, thus challenging prevailing misconceptions. Combining historical depth with contemporary relevance, the book serves as a valuable resource for scholars of theology, sociology, political science, and international relations.
The book discussion will engage participants in a discussion on the diversity, reform, and transformation within Deoband Islam. It will highlight the book’s central argument that Deoband thought is not a monolithic ideology but a dynamic intellectual tradition shaped by its interaction with society, politics, and faith in South Asia’s evolving landscape. This discussion will not only introduce the audience to a deeply researched and thought- provoking study but will also serve as a platform to rethink Deoband Islam — not as a monolithic ideology but as a living tradition of faith and reasoning that continues to evolve and respond to modern challenges.
