World famine crises: What should be our response?

Nearly 20 million people in Africa and the Arab peninsula face starvation as famine looms in Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, and Yemen. Causes range from drought to insurgency as well as civil war.

This round table discussion will explore how India and other G20 countries can respond to the situation and provide humanitarian assistance.

Key questions

  • What are the major causes for the present situation in Africa and the Arab peninsula?
  • What are the short, medium and long term solutions to the current crisis?
  • Given the long term impact of famines on the livelihoods of the affected persons, what steps should be undertaken to ensure that the current famines do not adversely affect the achievement of SDGs in Africa?
  • Can India and other G20 countries contribute positively, and in what way?
