Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visits to Mozambique and Brazil, and focus on IBSA and BRICS, have set the foundations of a new focus on the global South. It offers a new scope for Indo-Portuguese cooperation in Latin America, Africa and Asia.

This discussion will explore the potential for economic and security partnership between India, Portugal and the Lusophone nations.

The key questions include:

  • How can centuries of trade and cultural links between India and the Portuguese speaking countries be leveraged to develop a robust strategic relationship?
  • From Brazil to Angola, Mozambique and Timor-Leste, Indian and Portuguese interests are on a route of convergence. Can Lisbon and New Delhi devise triangular initiatives with these countries, from energy, science and technology to defence, security and peacekeeping?

Prime Minister of Portugal, H.E. António Costa, will deliver the address on: India and the Portuguese speaking world — a partnership for the 21st century.
