Across the world, militaries are adjusting themselves to meet the challenges of the future. There are two aspects to their efforts:

  • The awareness that better equipment, sensors and automation provide for greater capability; and
  • The exponential growth in the cost of new systems makes it imperative that the forces adjust their manpower requirements.

There is another factor: India is a state with nuclear weapons — as long as India’s deterrence capabilities are robust — India does not confront any existential threat.

This discussion will explore the repositioning and re-organisation of India’s  military profile as well as a readjustment of its manpower.
