Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to the US and other countries recently has revived talks of India's bid to obtain membership to the Nuclear Suppliers' Group.

While the US backed India, China spoke against it. Simultaneously, during Prime Minister Modi’s visit, India agreed to purchase US-made nuclear power plants after the earlier signing of the civil nuclear deal between the two nations, leading to America backing India for existing NSG members to supply nuclear material for Indian power-plants.

This discussion will look into India’s decision to purchase American equipments and further explore the criticisms that it gathered back home.

Speaker

L. V. Krishnan will lead the discussion. Mr. Krishnan, formerly with IGCAR, Kalpakkam, has written extensively on nuclear issues, including nuclear power plants and weapons, particularly since the commencement of the India-US negotiations on civilian nuclear agreement.
