The future of Syria

Talk by H.E. Riad Kamel Abbas

With the fall of Mosul in Iraq, and fierce ongoing battles in the self-declared capital of the Islamic State’s caliphate in Raqqa, Syria, many analysts have started to celebrate the demise of ISIS. However, the costs of these battles have been tremendous, not only from a humanitarian perspective, but politically as well, leaving Syria with multiple insurgency movements, sectarian militias and political vacuums that remain available to be filled by the strongest political proponent of a given region.

Amid these developments, the Syrian government, led by President Bashar al-Assad has been an equal recipient of both international support and condemnation for its role in the conflict, which had its roots in the Arab Spring uprisings of West Asia that began in 2010

Discussions at this event will include a wide range of topics around the Syrian conflict — its past, present and the future.
