Our common future: Global challenges, polarised politics, and the information society

Special address by Larry Kramer

Larry Kramer is the President of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. Before joining the Foundation, Mr. Kramer served as Richard E. Lang Professor of Law and Dean of Stanford Law School. He also serves as a director on the boards of a number of nonprofit organisations, including the National Constitution Center, Independent Sector, and the ClimateWorks Foundation. He is the author of numerous articles and books, including The People Themselves: Popular Constitutionalism and Judicial Review.

With digital platforms and the proliferation of Internet-enabled devices, citizens now have access to more content than ever before. The sudden influx of unregulated information means that individuals not only consume facts, but opinions. Illustratively, constant engagement on social media can hinder the creation of independent perspectives, which often leads to polarisation. An increasingly-divisive narrative underpins not only local discourse, but international forums as well. As a result, global consensus regarding how best to confront societies’ wicked challenges is in short supply.

Samir Saran, Vice President, ORF, will moderate the discussion.

The timing of this event is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
