Irrigation and drinking water needs are becoming an increasing problem across most parts of the world, and India is no exception. In context of water-starved states, especially states like Tamil Nadu which are rain-fed and rains becoming unpredictable river-linkage has become spoken of as a permanent solution. However, there are political, technical and funding issues. Thus, the need to look at alternative solutions, at least in the interim, pending finalization and execution of any river-linkage project.

Mr N S Venkatraman, a chemical engineer by education and training, has also been actively studying issues of larger national interest and concern, involving technological and financial aspects.
