Vivan Sharan likes to describe himself as a 'deep generalist.' Having formerly headed ORF's Global Governance Initiative, he has been working closely with the Indian government on strategic areas, such as the BRICS, G20, IORA and IBSA groupings. He has also worked with a number of private sector and civil society stakeholders as part of his efforts within the Development and Outreach team at ORF between March 2011 and March 2015. Among other flagship projects at ORF, he has helped set up and run the Asian Forum on Global Governance, a policy school for young professional leaders from around the world.

Some of the additional areas of his policy work include Sustainable Development and Climate Change. In a previous role as the Business Head of GTrade Carbon Ex Rating Services, a private limited company, he helped set up India's first carbon efficiency index on the Bombay Stock Exchange (the S&P BSE GREENEX). He has also been closely involved on a number of corporate sustainability-linked initiatives with international organisations and has written extensively on the subject. Given his discursive policy experience, he currently runs a boutique advisory firm.Sharan started his career in the global financial markets, trading equities, commodities and currencies at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. He has graduated from the University of Edinburgh and St. Stephens College, University of Delhi.
