Following close on the heels of the biggest recession after World War II, the forthcoming Copenhagen Summit scheduled for December 2009 is being watched keenly by the global community. The outcome of Copenhagen summit would not only decide the contours of the successor to the Kyoto Protocol but would also shape future debate on Climate and Development. In preparation for the Copenhagen Summit, the global meet on “Sustainable Development and Climate Change” is being organised by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) in collaboration with the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung (RLS), Berlin on September 24 – 25, 2009 in New Delhi to pluralise the climate debate and broaden its scope to include community level vulnerabilities and responses as well as to focus on the response to changes that may be already upon us due to the change in climate patterns. The organisers have invited distinguished speakers and sought contributions from them by way of papers on particular aspects of one of the themes. These papers and the proceedings of the event would thereafter be published and circulated to the wider global community and policy leaders.
The event is shaped around four main themes:
• Climate Change: Into the New Millennium: The Shaping of a Discourse
• Equity and Development
• Climate Change Mitigation: Toward a Responsible and Responsive Global Community
• Climate Change: The Adaptive Response
