Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung (RLS)
is one of the largest providers of political education
in Germany. RLS is part of the intellectual grass-roots
movement of democratic socialism and has developed into
a discussion forum for critical thinking and political
alternatives and a research institute for progressive
social development. In 1996, the Rosa Luxemburg
Foundation was recognised by the Party of Democratic
Socialism (PDS), nowadays under the formation Die LINKE
(The Left) as a national foundation, working in close
co-operation with the party. National political
education is carried out together with other members of
the Network of foundations. The Rosa Luxemburg
Foundation organises political education, provides
information about social perspectives in a globalised,
unjust world. It is a venue for critical analysis of
contemporary capitalism and debate about social
alternatives rooted in democratic socialism. Both in
Germany and internationally, RLS is a forum for dialogue
between left-wing socialist forces, social movements and
organisations, left-wing intellectuals and NGOs. It
supports young intellectuals in the form of
undergraduate and PhD scholarships and provides impetus
for self-determined socio-political activities and
bolsters the commitment to peace and understanding
between peoples, social justice and co-existence in
solidarity. The most important areas of international
cooperation for RLS are social and democratic
participation, empowering politically and socially
disadvantaged groups, alternatives for social
development, conflict prevention and peaceful conflict
resolution as well as the future of the European Union.
To these ends, the Foundation cooperates with different
organisations and think-tanks, left and democratic
socialist parties, trade unions, women's organisations
and the new social movements. It is active in more than
25 countries and participates in the process of the
World Social Forum. Since 2000, projects have been
funded by the Ministry for Economic Cooperation (BMZ)
and the Foreign office (AA). More information about the
Foundation is available at its website
