ZEIT – STIFTUNG EBELIN UND GERD BUCERIUS

Promoting Scholarship – Enriching the Cultural Heritage – Developing Competencies

The liberal spirit of Hamburg and Gerd Bucerius’ unflagging willingness to embrace the new – it is these two sources of inspiration that define the Zeit-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius. Its activities are centred on research and scholarship, art and culture as well as education and training. The flagship of the Foundation is the Bucerius Law School, founded in 2000 as the first private university for law studies in Germany, and already a strong innovative force in this academic discipline. The establishment of the Bucerius Kunst Forum in the heart of Hamburg underlines its importance in the arts. The ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius sees itself as part of civil society. In its pursuit of creative solutions and hands-on endeavor it remains indebted to its founder, Gerd Bucerius, whose readiness to participate in even the most controversial debate was matched by a willingness to take on active responsibility. Gerd Bucerius' passionate interest in politics, society, and culture deeply influenced the news weekly DIE ZEIT. The foundation, which bears both his name and that of his wife, follows in this tradition and pursues the same aims in its main areas of activity: scholarship and research, arts and culture, and education and training. The foundation also supports critical journalists, organizes programs for international young leaders, and initiates symposia and debates in many areas. The ZEIT-Stiftung develops its own programs and projects. Furthermore, the foundation supports projects in collaboration with national and international partner institutions in order to ensure the realization of new concepts. The ZEIT-Stiftung thus promotes people participation in civil society and helps citizens take responsibility for their community.
